Am I Dread Ready?
Are you thinking about dreads.
Always wanted them yet never found the courage.
Wanted dreads but heard all those horror stories...you know the ones about spiders living in them, smelly dreads that you don't wash, care free easy hairstyle ( needs more care and attention than you think ).
There's a bit to concider before you decide to join the dreaded community.
First of all is cost.
Dreads can be expensive to have created, adding extensions and the ongoing maintenance costs, then there's all the groovy accessories and delicious products to buy.
For new dreads, maintenance is recommended at 6 week intervals going onto 3 monthly for established dreads.
Scalp heath and hair type.
Sensitive scalp may find the creation and maintenance to be pinchy to painful. Even with the gentlest of methods.
The luscious thick dreads you may want and see in social media may not be possible with your hair type. All dreads are unique. Dreads take year to mature and will go through some rough stages. They will start off thinner than expected and will thicken over time.
You will need to concider your lifestyle choices, this will determine how much washing the dreads will need and how much maintenance is required. If you work out a lot, play sports, activities that make for sweat, dreads will need more washing and drying thoroughly, this takes more time than loose hair.
Wearing hats, caps and helmets will pull at the dreads, creating more fuzz.
What are your employment conciderations & opportunities. Unfortunately there is some resistance in certain fields that reject dreads.
Some concideration to family & friends whether it be approval or conflict.
Dreads always receive comments, from the good to the down right rude. Questions about your dreads over and over. Some may also find them an appropriation, yet no one culture owns dreadlocks, this can be difficult.

Dreads are a commitment. Dreads are not a day to day decision,
How patient are you ? Do you like to change your hair often from one trend to another? If you are impatient and like a quick change than permeant dreads may not be for you . Instead you could try:
temporary braid ins, add a dread ponytail to your loose hair or add a few hair wraps https://lokktologydreads.com.au/products/temporary-braid-in-dreads

Washing and drying dreads takes longer time than normal hair. They require a routine and drying 100% all the way through dreads. Dread rot can happen in wet dreads, therefore do not wet your dreads daily this will lead to mould and do not sleep with wet dreads.
Fluff lint every thing gets caught in the dreads. You spend a lot of time picking out fluff, lint, dreads are like velcro they attract things.
Dreads will join together if you don't separate them daily. This is as easy as running fingers through them to gently pull apart any joins.
